Watermarks

Watermarks began as far back as the 13th century when papermakers used them to identify their product, and governments used them on documents of value such as stamps and currency to inhibit counterfeiting. Today watermarks can be embedded digitally and are widely used in photography, art images and video to establish copyright and as a way to prevent re-use and re-sale without permission. Even the small tv channel logo in the corner of your screen is a watermark, identifying who owns the media you are viewing

Digital watermarks may also be invisible, identifying the owner of the material but not distorting the image. This method is often used to tag video to identify illegally copied movies.
